This Saturday EASA had the pleasure to join the Stockholm Pride Parade together with the Taipei Mission in Sweden 🏳️‍🌈🇹🇼🏳️‍🌈🇹🇼 As an organization that believes in equality and human rights, we celebrated that the Taiwan became the first country in Asia to allow same-sex marriage. With so many onlookers and parade participants cheering us on, it was heartening to see the level of support for this historic event🌈 Although progress have been made, many challenges still exists globally for the LGTBQ+ community. But as the Pride Parade shows, change is coming and more people stand behind the message that “love is love”🌈 For now we can take pride in that there is at least one country in the heart of Gaysia 🏳️‍🌈🇹🇼🏳️‍🌈🇹🇼

All good things must come to an end. Last Monday the team headed out for their last day in Tokyo, making sure to finish with a flourish! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There was one official meeting left in the diary, and it was a big one as the team visited the Swedish Embassy for a chat on all things foreign policy with experts from across the Embassy staff. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Next up, shoppingrunda! Because one cannot leave Tokyo without at least one kawaii souvenir, of course. After successfully draining Tokyo of all its stationery supplies, we regrouped and headed for Akihabara, which ended up being the favourite spot in Tokyo for a few of us. Perhaps looking at these photos you can see why! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you, Tokyo. Thank you, Japan. And especially, thank you to every individual and organisation who welcomed this (almost) brand new association into your offices and city and gave us your time. You gave us an unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. Arigatō gozaimasu!

“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Tokyo anymore” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Something a bit different last Sunday, as we left the big city behind in search of Buddha, bamboo and blossom. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We began the day in Kamakura, which was once upon a time the seat of Japan’s first shogunate and its most populous city. Today, Kamakura is one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, and we visited the Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in and the bamboo forest at Hōkoku-ji. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with a different side of Japan and begin to immerse ourselves in the country’s rich history, culture and traditions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Were there more photoshoots? Let’s just say, many a future profile picture was taken on this day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not satisfied with just this intrepid exploration, we finished off the day visiting Yokohama - the small, cool cousin of Tokyo. We visited the city’s Minato Mirai 21 district, Yokohama’s hyper-modern central business district, before dinner in Chinatown. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s fair to say there were a few tired eyes and aching feet on the train home, but a smile on every face as we prepared for our final day in Japan...

What a way to spend a Saturday! We started the morning meeting @climateyouthjapan , who engaged us in fantastic discussions about a climate-conscious future for both Japan and Sweden. It was great to see such engaged young people, and to learn so much from those whose voices are perhaps most vital in this conversation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then the afternoon. What can be said about @cheersmate11 ‘s full-on tour of Tokyo? No short description could do the day justice. We fished for our own lunch, viewed the world’s most famous street crossing from above, visited Sensō-ji temple and then dyed our own fabric in indigo blue, one of Japan’s National colours and the colour for the 2020 Olympics! All while making new friends along the way. Fun, insightful and just generally fabulous from start to finish! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If a good day is spent with friends, then last Saturday we truly were spoiled.

Last Friday, our Japan team had the incredible honour of meeting Terumi Tanaka, survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing and Secretary General of the Japan Confederation of A- and H- Bomb Sufferers Organisation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mr. Tanaka recounted for us his experience of that fateful day and the days and years that followed for the people of Nagasaki, as well as the global efforts made by the hibakusha, survivors of the atomic bombings, to halt further nuclear proliferation worldwide. It was an emotional experience, and we extend our deepest gratitude to @peaceboat.cruise and Mr. Tanaka for allowing us this opportunity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Friday was another great day, with a fantastic meeting at the Institute of Energy Economics in the morning that was among the best discussions we’ve had at EASA, as well as spending the evening dancing the night away in a karaoke booth, not an ABBA song left unsullied by our unpolished voices. Yet, the day will be remembered by most for this moving testimony from Mr. Tanaka that left an indelible impression on all our members. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ From all at EASA, thank you.

Well the guys were so busy in Japan that we didn’t post much, so let’s roll the clock back and catch up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thursday was probably the most intense and rewarding day of the trip, with visits to the European Business Council, Business Sweden and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO). It was a fantastic opportunity to hear about European-Japanese business and trade relations from all sides and from the people who helped make the recent free trade agreement between the EU and Japan happen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But of course, we didn’t stop there! Next up, was a trip to the Cherry Blossoms in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and a rather elaborate photoshoot for some of our members! We were predicted to miss the blossom so it was truly special to have made it in time. We then finished the day off with a trip to the observation decks at Tokyo Tochō for a skyline sunset and then to dinner in one of Tokyo’s most vibrant districts, Shinjuku. So yeah, fair to say this was a good day!
